How to Clean a Chromebook Screen

If you’re a Chromebook owner, the screen will get smudged up from time to time. Keep it clean with this helpful guide.

If you’re a Chromebook user, your screen is going to get smudged and dirty from time to time. That is especially true if it has a touchscreen. A dirty touchscreen can lead to it becoming unresponsive, but it can also make it harder to view what’s on screen.

Even standard screens can become covered in dust, coffee, and other splatters. If you’re sick of the dirt, here’s a look at how to clean a Chromebook screen.

Note: Before cleaning your Chromebook screen, ensure to unhook all cables—especially the power cord. Also, don’t use a harsh cleaning chemical like Windex as it can damage the screen.

Whether or not you have a touchscreen, reach for a microfiber cleaning cloth if your Chromebook’s screen is dirty. Run the cloth from the center of the screen to the edges applying light pressure to remove dust and other debris.

For heavier smears and other debris, apply a bit more pressure, but not too much that you crack or bend the screen.

If you have other stubborn smudges and debris, don’t use soap and water as that can damage the screen. Instead, use another cleaning solution available in your kitchen.

For example, create a mixture of equal parts vinegar and distilled water. Dab a bit of the solution on your microfiber cleaning cloth, and wipe down the screen, applying a bit more pressure to hardened debris.

Repeat the process until the screen is clean and free of fingerprints, dust, and other debris. Leave the screen up so it dries naturally, and begin using it again.

After you’ve done a thorough wipe down, periodically wipe it down with a microfiber cloth to get rid of dust, fingerprints, and smudges. Only use the vinegar cleaning solution when the screen is particularly dirty.

You could always use a screen cleaning kit like the Audioquest CleanScreen Kit, but it’s more expensive than using a microfiber cloth with vinegar and water. You’ll get the same results regardless.

If you don’t have a microfiber cloth and only have light dust on the screen, you can use canned air to clean your chromebook. However, you’ll need to be a bit cautious with it. It’s suitable for light dust and debris to clean the screen without touching it.

Hold the canned air several inches from the screen and spray in short bursts. Be careful not to hold it too close to the screen or tip the can. Otherwise, the chemicals in the canned air can damage the screen.

There are a few things you’ll want to avoid using to clean your screen.

The biggest thing to remember is to avoid using paper towels or tissues as they contain particles that can scratch the surface of the screen.

Also, don’t use dirty microfiber cloths. If your cloth is covered in abrasive particles, you could also end up scratching your screen. Whenever you clean your Chromebook screen, always use a fresh and unused cloth.

If you regularly clean your Chromebook screen, you’ll prevent dust and debris build-up, so you always have a clear view of your screen. Just remember, you don’t want to clean it with anything abrasive—namely paper towels and tissues.
