(Seguin) – The city of Seguin is hoping that the cooler temperatures and/or the desire to spruce up before the holidays will have families cleaning up their homes and yards this weekend. Saturday is the bi-annual Clean-Up Day for the city of Seguin. Citizens who reside in the Seguin city limits will have the chance to bring a variety of unwanted items to the Seguin Coliseum parking lot for disposal on Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon.

Jennifer Sourdellia, the public information officer for the city of Seguin, says the city hosts clean-up days every fall and spring. She says the clean-up allows citizens to get into the habit of clearing out their yards and homes of all those unwanted or broken items.

“We are just asking people if they’ve got things around their house that they want to get rid of, this is the perfect time to come and bring it to us and we will essentially just take care of the rest of it. We are going to be accepting a large variety of items from junk items including things like old bicycles, mattresses, furniture, scrap metal. We are also accepting appliances but Freon must be removed and we will also be accepting up to 10 automobile tires. Paper shredding is going to be another service that we are offering our residents so residents can bring a maximum of two boxes or bags of documents and we will take those and it’s all free,” said Sourdellia.

Sourdellia says all residents have to do is haul their junk to the Seguin Coliseum parking lot and let others do the rest of the work.

“If you just want to load up all of those things into the back of your truck or a trailer, show up to the Seguin Coliseum, our staff will unload everything and we will have several garbage dumpsters and what not and we will be able to get rid of all of that for you,” said Sourdellia.

While most items will be accepted, Sourdellia warns against those items that will not be accepted during Saturday’s clean-up.

“We tend to get a lot of people who bring construction debris or building debris such as plywood or treated wood items, old fences, sheds or torn down building materials and that is one thing that we never accept at this Clean-Up Day. Also, hazardous materials and chemicals. These things are going to include things such as old televisions, cell phones, computers and even computer monitors. So, none of those electronic devices are going to be accepted,” said Sourdellia.

Participants must provide proof of residency in the city limits by showing a photo ID or utility bill. A maximum of 10 automobile tires will be accepted. No tractor-trailer, mower, bicycle or ATV tires will be collected. Tires with rims or tires larger than 19.5 inches will not be taken, nor will tires from local businesses. Again, participation in the city wide Clean-Up is free.  The Seguin Coliseum is located at 950 S. Austin Street.
